Hi All,
Spent a great day birding Prime Hook NWR, Indian River Inlet and OC Inlet.
Along Broadkill Rd I witnessed a spectacle of what seemed like at least
100,000 Snow Geese descending from the skies and litterally filling the
southern pond/lake. Fortunately, I had already managed to pick out one
adult and one juvenile ROSS'S GEESE before the masses arrived. Also at the
pond were a Snowy Egret and a Great Egret. I also easily found the
stationary NORTHERN SHRIKE along Entrance Rd leading to the Visitor's
Center.
At the Indian River Inlet I was greeted by six very vocal Boat-tailed
Grackles, and noticed to my surprise a perched adult male PEREGRINE FALCON
on a telephone pole only 100 feet from the Jetty. On the oceanside I saw a
Brown Pelican and a GREAT CORMORANT, and after a thorough check I spotted
a first-winter LITTLE GULL among the 100+ Bonaparte's Gulls on the water.
Encouraged by the good birds at the Indian River Inlet, I hurried down to
Ocean City Inlet. Best birds here were however eight Brown Pelicans and
some very co-operative Purple Sandpipers. The large number of Bonaparte's
Gulls (200+) did not produce any interesting small gulls and the Eiders
were nowhere to be seen. Perhaps all the boat traffic and fishermen kept
them on the back of the southern jetty.
I finished off with a quick stop at the Eagle's Landing Golf Course where
I was lucky to find the drake EURASIAN WIGEON grazing on the course in a
small group of American Wigeons.
This is what I call a winter!
