Hardly in the same category as a Tropical Kingbird, but yesterday (Dec
29) just after 11am on the way to Blackwater, I & my visiting grandson
from Vermont saw a humongous flock of blackbirds on Egypt Road.
Actually there were several huge flocks merging and diverging in the air
at times, and settled in the fields at times.
I won't pretend to have estimated the numbers accurately, but I think
100,000 is not an outrageous claim. Most of the birds were Common
Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds, with a small percentage of
Brown-headed Cowbirds.
