Yesterday at Blackwater. We saw only 6 of the American White Pelicans in the
afternoon from near the end of Wildlife Drive. They could be seen also from the
parking lot at the bridge across the Blackwater river, further away but less
obscured, along with numerous Tundra Swans. Was told at the visitors center
that a DNR light plane flying low in the morning had flushed the flock which
rose and followed an arc about the visitor center and then settled back -they
counted 23 or so. The birds we saw were roosting, that is hunkered down but
they have been also seen feeding. There were also the most enormous flocks
of blackbirds, grackles and red wings, gleaning the fields on Keywallace before
the visitors center. In addition at least 3 swallows, presumably tree swallows,
and quite a number of bald eagles.
