I took advantage of the summer weather and drove the ORV zone on Saturday,
as did hundreds of surf fishermen. On the way down, there were no
sanderlings at all, which caused a bit of concern, but on the way back up,
with most of the fishermen gone, there were 220 sanderlings present, in
groups of 4 - 60 birds. One bird had a green flag on its upper left leg
and a red band on its upper right leg. It appeared to have an aluminum band
of its lower right leg, but they run so darn fast that it was hard to
verify this. Does anyone know to whom this sighting should be reported? I
knew once before, but have lost the contact information.
Also present were 5 brown pelicans, lots of gulls (nothing unusual amongst
them, however), black and surf scoters, and gannets.
