Hello All,
A much more typical January outing this week with a total of 36 species. The highlights were 3 Chipping Sparrows that continue at the feeders and 1 immature White-crowned that joined them. In general, activity at the feeder has increased noticeably since it got cold. Yesterday, they were eating with purpose before the snow arrived. Also, Brown Creeper and a Sapsucker at the feeders eating peanut butter suet.
Away from the feeders, I found a flock of 30 House Finch mixed with a few Goldfinch and 9 Bluebirds. This is the most House Finch in years, but a far cry from the 200+ of the mid-90s. 2 Fox Sparrows were found along the RR behind my property (MD). I was surprised to see 2 Killdeer on the farm, figuring that they would be forced out by the freeze.
Around the local roads, there were 4 Winter Wrens (2 on Horseshoe Rd - DE and 2 on Kinder Rd - MD) and a Phoebe on Kinder Rd. And after last weekends extravaganza, I saw 0 swans, 0 Snow Geese, 1 Ring-billed Gull, 0 blackbirds of any flavor.
Numbers - heard a GH Owl Saturday evening and added the White-crown to make 65 species for the year. This is, by far, my best start as 65 birds will stand as the best end of February total, let alone January.

Good Birding,
