Wintering Semi-palmated Sandpipers

The article questioning Christmas Count records of Semi-palmated 
Sandpipers on the East Coast was written by A. R. Phillips. His 
reasoning, which turned out to be correct, was that during the 19th 
Century there were no collected Semis that were placed in museum 
collections. And, there were lots of shorebirds collected along the 
East Coast back in the good old days. Sure enough, when semis were 
collected in the late 1980s (early 90s) all of them were westerns. So 
much for sight records.

I don't recall where the article was published, but it might have 
been Audubon Field Notes, or whatever it was called in those days.
