Now that I am almost done with my winter counts the weather is finally
seasonable. Took my 7th Old River Rd count (aka Hunting Quarter Rd)
Tuesday (1-30). Highlights were 13 Winter Wrens, 4 Eastern Phoebes, 4
Hermit Thrushes, 13 Eastern Bluebirds and
3 mockingbirds. The latter two species have been more conspicuous on the
past two counts with the colder weather. Although they are common this year
I also had my first Red-headed Woodpecker on this count. On my way back
through the fields I had another 3 Winter Wrens and 2 Hermit Thrushes.
Robins, Cedar Waxwings and Myrtle Warblers have been scarce this
winter. I usually see a few robins and myrtles on the counts. Checking the
Red Cedars along River Rd I found that very few of them have berries which
accounts in large part for this scarcity.
