Since Patty isn't around much lately (off visiting her
grandkid in Phoenix) and Jane Kostenko is getting
ready for a trip, I'll fend off this question.

Shrimpy was first found by Patty Craig in 1998.
January I believe. She initially thought, as did most
of us who viewed the bird again in 1999, that it was
one of the other subspecies of Lesser Black-backed
Gull, likely L. fuscus intermedius, graellsii being
the usual candidate. Shrimpy was pretty consistent at
the Sea Breeze for years but the last sighting was in
March of 2005. Last year Jane wrote an obituary in
Winging It! for Shrimpy on the one year anniversary of
the last sighting. We went down there to try for
Shrimpy on 1/1, as usual, but there were very few
Great Black-backed Gulls and certainly no Kelp Gull.

So, sadly, Shrimpy's reign lasted from the winter of
1997/98 until March 2005. Here's a link to photos
taken on the last day:

Keep your eyes out for hybrids.
