Tree Swallows dine on insects and berries, etc (such as bayberry), so
they don't need to move south as fast as other species when cold
weather limits insect availability. We've seen them right through the
winter here in Worcester County during relatively mild winters. I
think frozen ponds may push them further south faster than a lack of
insects.
