Calmer weather brought the birders out today to Rt 121; at mid-afternoon,
the parking area was overflowing. I was hoping that someone would post
who's better at id and counting than I am! Here's what I saw over two stops:
1 redneck grebe (on the west side)
6 or 8 horned grebes (both sides of the road)
A few ringnecks -- maybe a dozen
several pair of hooded mergansers
a large number of common mergansers - both sexes (both sides of the road)
pair of common golden eye
some buffleheads
2 large groups of canvasbacks (west side)
couple of pairs of mallards
I thought I saw one Am Black duck, but mixed with mallards so wasn't sure
a few pied-billed grebes
as usual, lots of Canada geese and lots of coots
There were lots of dots, as well. You know, the ones that are just beyond
your focus?
One of the mature bald eagles landed in a tree just beside the road.
And a highlight: a pair of very healthy looking foxes hunting along the edges
of the lake (looking toward the dam). watched one try to sneak up on a
group of Canada geese feeding on the ground.
What I didn't see and really wanted to: the Long-Tail Duck reported to be on
the lake earlier in the week. Also, the large number of Tundra Swans there at
the end of the week were not in evidence.
Ok, you'all who were also there, what did I miss?
