I took a quick walk along the south side of Greenbelt Lake and across the dam in mid-afternoon yesterday (Monday). I saw a slightly different
mix of birds than those reported by Warren Strobel earlier in the day. Aside from the many Canada Geese, Mallards, and Ring-billed Gulls, the
highlights included the following:

Ring-necked Duck - 24+
American Wigeon - 4-5
Redhead - 6
Wood Duck - 2 (1 male, 1 female)
American Black Duck - 1
Hooded Merganser - 1 female
Ruddy Duck -1 (probably more)
American Coot -1
Pied-billed Grebe - 1
scaup sp. - several?

I wasn't able to look closely at or count the scaup or locate the female Goldeneye that has been reported at the lake (I had my dog with me and
she wasn't behaving very well at that point).

Late in the afternoon I stopped briefly at the National Wildlife Visitor Center. Both lakes are largely ice-covered, so waterfowl were scarce. I
did see a small group of Ring-necked Ducks (a couple dozen) and 5 or 6 Mallards on Lake Redington. The best birds were two energetic and
vocal Pileated Woodpeckers.
