Took my last winter count this morning before the impending storm. Did
Hunting Quarter Rd and came back through the fields. By the time I arrived
there was already a light covering of snow which continued to fall all the
time I was here. Relatively warm temperatures over the weekend opened up
some the water around the edges of the impoundments.
Highlights were 1 Am Black Duck & Great Blue Heron in the open water,
female Wood Duck resting on the ice among buttonbush, a flock of 12 Rock
Pigeons feeding on corn stubble (usually the only ones I see here now are
flying over), 1 Red-headed Woodpecker (had all seven species of woodpeckers:
hairy is usually the hardest one to find), 6 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers ( I
am amazed how much they call during bad weather), 2 lingering Eastern
Phoebes, 2 flyover Horned Larks, 11 Winter Wrens, 18 Eastern Bluebirds, 4
Hermit Thrushes, a Brown Thrasher, one American Pipit (feeding on vegetation
above the ice in the large impoundment), one Eastern Towhee (have found
several this winter) and 2 Rusty Blackbirds.
All other species were in normal numbers for this winter.
