Hi all,
I'm wondering if any of my fellow MD birders have any stories of nicknames
that they've gotten and the stories behind them.
My wife and I have a nickname that we joke about and we've gotten quite a
few chuckles about it over the past couple of years.
It all came about when we lived in Hyrum, Utah, across from the reservior,
which as a part of Hyrum State Park. We had a plan that we were going to
put Hyrum State Park on the map as a birding hotspot in exchange for our
being allowed to enter the park whenever we wanted, free of charge.
The head park ranger was all for this, and one morning I was talking to him
about some of the birds he'd been seeing, including a "Red-headed
Woodpecker". I told him that there were no Red-headed Woodpeckers in Utah,
and that he had probably seen a Downy or a Hairy, which depended upon size.
He insisted that it was a Red-Headed, and that his claim would be backed-up
by a person that lived across the street.
When I asked him about this person in more detail, he said that a "really
good birder" lived in the new apartment complex. By this time, I realized
he was talking about Jill, my wife, and so i laughed and told him the
"really good birder" was my wife. When I got home and told Jill, she just
looked at me and said, "Oh, I guess you're just the other birder that lives
across the street..."
So, since that day, I've been "the other birder" in my family...
Do any of you have any stories like this one?
Good birding,
Richard
