At 5:50 this morning (Tuesday) I walked down the driveway to get the paper.
To my amazement, I heard woodcocks peenting in the field across the street.
This is a field of about 30 acres, 2/3 in hay field and the rest with one
new house with short stubble left in its "yard." I was able to pick up 3
different birds peenting as I stood listening for about 10 minutes. I
neither heard nor saw any display flights (there was some dawn light). I
did hear one bird take flight and fly across the road into my yard. Great
way to start the morning! Unfortunately, the paper was not there yet. Now
I need to listen for the sound of a 15 year old Chevy with a bad muffler.
