I have told prospective birders for several centuries now that it's a cheap
thrill. All you need is a decent pair of binocs, a field guide and a good
pair of hiking shoes. The high tech world will always be lost on me. In
fact, the only time I ever remember to carry a notepad is on count days.
Thanks to Bill Hubick and Joe Alexander for clearing up the Gambel's
Sparrow. It's the West Taiga subsp of the White-crowned. However, Joe points
out there are 5 subspecies available. If we can just get somebody to split
them we can all get 4 more ticks. Write your AOU rep now.
