Hi Folks,

Elaine and I took a late afternoon hike through the Natural Resources
Management Area at the end of Smoky Rd. in Calvert Co., once again making
the several-mile round trip from the parking area to the river. At dusk we
sat in the car in the parking area till about 6:15, then walked across the
field toward the old barn, awaiting evidence of woodcocks. We heard our
first peent at 6:28, and watched a complete display flight, while listening
to the wing-whistle of another bird. Being pretty tuckered out, we left
around 6:35. Some of the birds seen or heard during the hike:

Wood Duck--5 (4m 1f), marshes along river
Am. Black Duck--5 flyovers
Green-winged Teal--pair, marshes along river
Scaup--about 75 on the river, appeared to be all Lesser
Common Merganser--1 drake on river
Killdeer--6 in one of the fields
Barred Owl--pair called to each other spontaneously; one seen briefly
Brown Thrasher--heard chupping along the trail
Yellow-rumped Warbler--2
Pine Warbler--1, foraging on the ground with bluebirds and juncos
Savannah Sparrow--12
