Folks

I did some work in the backyard yesterday and had to endure hours of woodpeckers on territory. The most vociferous was Pileated. The pair has been carrying on since the weekend, and nearly constant. They were joined by Northern Flicker, Red-bellied, and Hairy. They nearly drummed and wek-wek-wek wekked out the distant traffic noise.

Remembering the recent atlas dates, most of the woodpeckers are in safe dates on March 15. Maybe the warm spell has stimulated them a little early. The woodpeckers are resident birds and likely did not read the Bluebook.

While out feeding the outside birds this morning, an Eastern Phoebe started singing and continued for several minutes. This guy seemed to be on territory even though safe date is May 1. Some must sing while migrating. The Pileated were at it when I came in.

Enjoy the warm spell.

George
