After some diligent searching someone in this morning's group finally spotted one of the Long-eared Owls high in a pine tree at Morgan Run. After a lot of looking at different angles I was finally convinced that it was a Long-ear. It compressed its face downward so that it looked nothing like the pictures in any field guide. The ear tufts were held outward so that it was difficult to tell where they were attached. The small crosses on the underparts were the most compelling feature to identify it at that point. It eventually shifted its posture slightly allowing good views through the telescopes. I hope someone is able to post a photo later.
I will be at the Ben Rose Lane parking lot at 2PM this afternoon and 9AM tomorrow. The bird continues to be seen from the trail without flushing but you need a telescope.
