Around 3:30 Sunday afternoon, we took a brief walk along the C&O Canal towpath starting at Carderock Park, near the David Taylor Naval Research Center. Very few birds in the windy conditions, but we were privy to another amazing sign of spring. In the large vernal pool at the west end of the westernmost parking lot at Carderock, there was a frency of mating Wood Frogs. The smaller males were singing and pursuing and mounting the larger females (another frog watcher told us the male squeezes the female to get her to release her eggs and then he releases his sperm). We could see a large number of egg masses attached to twigs in the water. Quite a sight. Don't know if it is still going on but well worth the trip.
