Hi all,

This morning, I met up with Wallace Kornack at Morgan Run to see if we could
find the Long-eared Owls. I arrived at 11:15 AM and Bob Ringler was there
along with Janet (I believe). They were on the trail when I arrived, so I
waited for Wallace in the parking lot. While waiting, I saw my first Common
Grackle of the year. They returned from the trail, and Bob told me where
the Owls were seen. He offered to take me to them, but I told him I was
waiting for Wallace, so he left. Wallace arrived at about 11:45 AM and we
went off to look for the owls.

We went off to the spot wherre Bob told us to look, and at first we didn't
see them (I think they might be so well hidden that we aren't really
disturbing them a lot?). I began to scan the trees with my binocs and I
soon saw them (now, describing to Wallace where they were was another
matter...). So, I got my scope and tried to find them (it turns out that I
found one with my binocs, and while scoping for them, I located the other
one). I got the owl centered in the scope and let Wallace have a look. He
was delighted! When I looked in the scope again, I could not believe what I
saw. It turns out that the owls were located one above the other, and I had
both of them in one scope view! That was when I realized that I had located
one with my binocs (the lower one) and the other with the scope (the upper
one).

We stayed for a little while, until we had had our fill of looking at these
magnificent creatures, though I must say, that I for one, can never get
enough of an owl. After this, it was off to Piney Run Park, where I ran
into Bob again as I was about to leave. We went to the deep end of the lake
together, and saw the Hooded and Common Mergs, Canada Geese and Ring-billed
Gulls. Earlier I had seen an immature Bald Eagle. At that point, I checked
out the Nature Center and then made my way home.

All in all, three year birds on the day.

Good birding,
Richard
