Hi,

Last Sunday I also went searching for the Eurasion Wigeon that had been
seen at Cold Bottom Road and I also had no success. All I saw at the ponds
were Canada Geese and Mallards. I did see ~20 American Wigeon and several
RN Ducks at the pond just south of this site off Belfast Road, but no
EuWi. If someone wants to check out the ponds again there is good parking
off of Cold Bottom Road just West of the intersection with Yeoho Road where
it is possible to pull completely off of the road. I agree with others
that there is absolutely no shoulder on Cold Bottom Road East of the
intersection, in the vicinity of the ponds where the Eu Wigeon had been
seen, so it is very treacherous to stop there.

I then visited Paper Mill Flats where I found:
GW Teal - 5
Gadwall - 6
American Black Duck - 1
Hooded Merg - pair
CaGo, Mall

And several sites off Loch Raven:

White Pine:
REDHEADS - ~50 (Apparently these are common on Loch Raven!)
Coots ~ 200
Co Me - 30
RB MERG - 2
Am Wigeon - 6
Bufflehead - 5

At the small swamp where the stream crosses Dulaney Valley Road I heard
scores of Wood Frogs and Peepers calling. The Wood Frogs had joined
together into several large masses - very interesting.

Loch Raven Picnic Area:
RedHead - 60
Coots - 100
GREATER SCAUP - 3 drakes, 1 hen
Co Mergs - ~20
Am Wigeon

Then I drove over to Rt 40 and went north to Harford County to visit Swam
Farm. I passed some good swampy wetlands and some areas with water that
opened onto the bay and saw:
Swampy areas:
Mu Sw - 2
Wood Duck - 4
RN Ducks - dozens
Canada Geese, Mallards

Areas that opened onto the bay:
Com Merg - many
Hooded Merg - 2
GW Teal
AB Duck

When I arrived at Swan Cove some men had just finished installing new Wood
Duck Boxes so all of the ducks had flushed. But I did see the following
flying around with some of them landing:
Ca Go - 200
N Pintail ~10
GR Teal - ~20
A Black Duck ~10
W. Snipe - I flushed at least 18, but some could have reflushed. The place
was literally crawling with Snipe.

I finished the day at the hedgerow/meadow off Bulle Rock Drive where the
Clay Colored Sparrow was seen last fall. Near dusk I had a Snipe land
right next to me and watched it feed for a while and there was at least one
Woodcock Peenting and displaying.

A police officer stopped to see what I was doing there. He was worried I
might be poaching and was very happy when he found out that I was carrying
a camera and not a gun. He was extremely friendly and said that to the
best of his knowledge there were no 'No Trespassing' signs and it was fine
to bird there. He did warn me to stay away from the parking lot for the
big building to the north because they were quite sensitive to
that. Fortunately I was parked on the side of the road and he was quite
happy with this.

All in all a great day, but I had hoped I might see a RN Grebes on Lock
Raven. Apparently they were seen by others that day but although I spent a
lot of time there I didn't see them. I guess there are lots of coves to
hide in.

Tom
