Columbia, MD, Howard County
northern end of Lake Kittamaqundi
in the tops of the trees
viewed from the southwest leaf of the Rts 29 & 175 cloverleaf

My daughter and I drove around the cloverleaf at Rts 29 & 175 in Columbia
today trying to get an accurate count of the heron nests visible in the tops of
the trees - not successful, but I believe there were around 20. We saw at
least 3 herons standing on the nests, and 2 flying in the air around the nests.

The best view was obtained by driving north on 29, crossing under 175 and
exiting and looking to the southwest. Just stay on the entrance/exit ramps
and you can loop around the cloverleaf catching some good looks. (Be careful
to stay aware of the other cars who might also be exiting/entering.)
