This afternoon I birded some areas around the western end of the Mall,
including Constitution Gardens and the DC WWI Memorial, plus the Tidal
Basin and Hains Point. Highlights included three FOX SPARROWS at the WWI
Memorial, three AMERICAN PIPITS at the tip of Hains Point, and a VESPER
SPARROW near the southern end of the Hains Point golf course. In
addition, there were two Ospreys on the railroad bridge trestle, a Bald
Eagle near the Washington Monument, and three Bonaparte's Gulls at the
end of Hains Point. A select list of sightings follows.

Pied-billed Grebe (Constitution Gardens, Washington Channel)
Double-crested Cormorant (Tidal Basin, Washington Channel)
American Wigeon (Constitution Gardens)
Redhead (Constitution Gardens)
Ring-necked Duck (Constitution Gardens)
Lesser Scaup (Tidal Basin, river, Washington Channel)
Red-breasted Merganser (Tidal Basin, Washington Channel)
Osprey (14th Street railroad bridge)
Bald Eagle (Washington Monument)
Cooper's Hawk (U.S. Capitol)
American Coot (Constitution Gardens, Washington Channel)
Bonaparte's Gull (Hains Point)
Eastern Phoebe (Constitution Gardens)
American Pipit (Hains Point)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (Tidal Basin)
Vesper Sparrow (Hains Point)
Fox Sparrow (DC WWI Memorial)
Swamp Sparrow (Hains Point golf course)
Red-winged Blackbird (Constitution Gardens)
Common Grackle (Constitution Gardens)

I did not see any Horned Grebes today.

Good birding,

John Beetham
