Today, Monday, March 19, between noon and two p.m., I had a nice
"mini-Big Sit" at the grassy field north of East-West Highway and
between Beach Drive and Meadowbrook Lane in southern Montgomery
County. There are currently a few crescent-shaped rain pools in the
field near the roadside and as my son splashed in these puddles, I
noticed a killdeer in company of three water pipits. Close looks at
the juncos, song and white-throated sparrows at the creek's shrubby
edge yielded views of two savannah sparrows with a vesper sparrow in
their company. Overhead, a sharp-shinned hawk or two, an American
kestrel, and a red-tailed hawk kept the many robins edgy. This area
can be reached by turning off East-West Highway on Meadowbrook north.
You pass a temple immediately on the left then can park in the
parking lot behind, which is both for the temple and the park. Walk
back toward East-West Highway, with the bike path to your back and
the creek ahead of you.
Best,
