After the long round of discussions involving the Long-eared Owl in
Carroll County, I've decided to add a new posting rule to the list. I
don't make new rules lightly, but sometimes we need to make a
statement about things that should be part of our natural response to
the birds we love so much.

Here it is:

"Post messages regarding owl locations ONLY for Short-eared and Snowy
Owls. All other owl postings are NOT welcome here. This is for the
protection of the owls."

When you think about it, this really isn't a new rule at all, but
harks back to the days when Claudia Wilds was in charge of the ANS
Voice of the Naturalist. It only makes good sense, especially now
when so many listing instincts can be triggered by this medium.

This isn't to say that you can't claim bragging rights about owl
sightings--we all love to see or hear an owl--but please, please,
please do not post directions or locations for those owls.

Thanks for understanding and abiding by this rule.

Best,
Norm
