Before heading to work (in Washington!!) in the afternoon, I spent
the morning birding in the other direction, in Caroline County...
First stop was Martinak State Park outside Denton. Highlights were:
_ a pair of Common Mergansers in the river
_ Osprey (4) everywhere, busily building nests
_ a Phoebe, heard.
_ Chipping Sparrow (FOY)
I then motored over to Tuckahoe State Park. Not much on the lake,
but:
_ several more Eastern Phoebes (2 or 3) hanging around the buildings
near the playground
_ Pine Warbler (FOY) up in the pine trees nearby
Not far from the park were a Kestrel on a telephone wire and 6
Wilson's Snipe, sneaking around a small wet area in a field.
Final stop was Adkins Arboretum:
_ Field Sparrows singing everywhere. Must have been 5-6 of these
suckers
_ Eastern Bluebird (1 adult, 1 imm)
_ Tree Swallow, competing with the Bluebirds for a box.
_ late-ish White-Throated Sparrow
_ Eastern Towhee
_ Dark-Eyed Juncos, still hanging on.
Pipits were, as usual, un-found.
Good Birding!
