Inspired by Dave Powell's post, I headed for North Beach this morning, where construction appears to have frightened off the shovellers. However, I enjoyed the grebes off shore, mostly horned grebes in breeding plumage. However, in one group off the pier there were two distinctly smaller with just a few golden feathers, unlike their fellows, with yellow "horns". I think they were eared grebes, and I hope someone else will check them out.
Green-winged teals were feeding in the marsh, but my "snipe count" was way low: only one.
A laughing gull flew overhead, my first of the year.
