Interestingly, I was in and around Great Smoky Mountains National Park
(Tennessee side) last week hiking and exploring. Present was an abundance
of three birds: Blue-headed Vireos, Louisiana Waterthrushes, and
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS. And I do mean an abundance - they were
everywhere. The only other warbler I found was a single Yellow-throated
Warbler calling in a low floodplain. Given this low warbler species count,
I thought it quite odd for so many BT Greens to be around minus others we
typically will hear early - N. Parula and A. Redstart come to mind. I don't
know lower Appalachia that well, but perhaps maybe there is something with
BT Greens this year. Also interesting was the BT Greens song. I've heard
BT Greens here for 30 years plus, and there song always sounds the same to
me, but these TN birds had a much higher tone to basically the same song. I
would say our birds here have the lower "draw". Just thought I pass along
this southernly observation.
