I was at Pennyfield Lock in Montgomery County on Friday afternoon between
4:00 and 6:30. There were 10 blue-winged teals in the second impoundment
as you are walking upstream. On my return trip I heard some high, thin calls
and was looking for a small bird to match these sounds. But they were
actually coming from the teals. According to Sibley, these are "courting calls."
