Dear All
I went down to Hains Point in central DC for an hour of post-storm fun in the
early evening today. Tempted by glimpses of a small flock of Bonaparate's
Gulls from the Rock Creek Parkway late afternoon I was able to spend from 6-
7pm in the area with the following birds of note:
Horned Grebe - 19 (single flock really close with many full sum plum birds -
great)
Pied-billed Grebe - 1
DC Cormorant - c80
Cattle Egret - 1 (flying upriver)
Shoveler - 3 (sitting in the middle of the Potomac - took me ages to id)
Bufflehead - 9
Red-breatsed Merg - 38
Osprey - 1
Coot - 3
Killdeer - 3
Bonaparte's Gull - 75
Laughing Gull - 1
Caspian Tern - 18 (including 7 perched on the golf course)
Chimney Swift - 1
Tree Swallow - c70
Purple Martin - 2
N Roughwing - 17
Barn Swallow - 8
Brown Thrasher - 1
Towhee - 1
Savannah Sparrow - 2
Chipping Sparrow - 1
All the swallows and martins were in the Washington Channel feeding very low
over the water. To my surprise the swift was with these birds too (looked like
a storm petrel !).
Whilst i didn't see anything remarkable there was definitely a feeling that birds
had fallen from the storm - lots of large puddles on the golf course were
packed with common birds - and it would be worthwhile taking another look
early tomorrow morning if anyone is able to do so.
Cheers
Gary
