Decided to take advantage of this sunny albeit windy day. North East Town
Park had an adult RED SHOULDERED HAWK-a beautiful adult bird that we saw
in flight, then perched in a tree behind the Upper Bay Museum. Other great
birds were a pair of BLUE WINGED TEAL, an unexpected CASPIAN TERN in flight
above the creek, OSPREY-a nest which was previously there was still there
after the Nor-easter, a single BONAPARTE"S GULL, COOTS, a pair of RED
BREASTED MERGANSERS, a single SHOVELER, at least a dozen TREE
SWALLOWS, a single BARN SWALLOW and one unidentifiable swallow that was
possibly a BANK SWALLOW. My husband and I then decided to scan a flooded
horse pasture on RT 272 and Hance Pt. Rd. (next to Wayside Snack Bar) in
North East for swallows. To our amazement we found a LITTLE BLUE HERON
amongst the horses and CANADA GEESE! We then headed for Elk Neck SP.
Roque's Harbor had a single NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOW, 5 WOOD
DUCKS, a PIED BILLED GREBE and CANADA GEESE. All in all it was a great day
to be out with our feathered friends!
