Hi,

I took a quick walk along the Little Patuxent in Savage before work this
morning. I started near the Savage Mill and walked upstream along the
south side of the river. Here are some of the birds I saw:

Wood Ducks - pair in the trees near an old snag. I'll have to return to
see if they might be nesting here.
Belted Kingfisher
Eastern Phoebes
Hermit Thrush
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Myrtle Warblers - ~8
Yellow-throated Warbler - 1 singing at the end of trail.

The second half of this trail, after you pass the rapids at Savage Rocks,
is generally best and can be excellent later in the spring and in the fall
for thrushes. It can also be good for migrating warblers. A leisurely
walk up and back took me about an hour. There is parking along Foundry
Street, which crosses the Little Patuxent and connects Savage to Gorman Road.

If you have more time there are also more trails on the other side of the
river that start from Savage Mill and some nice trails nearby off
Voellmerhausen Road where it is possible to follow the Little Patuxent
downstream to its confluence with the Middle Patuxent. The parking lot,
south of Voellmerhausen and West of the Little Patuxent, identifies this as
the Wincopin area.

Tom
