Along the C and O canal Thursday morning. Riley's lock to Violette's lock in Montgomery county.
Some notable sightings:
As I pished up a Field Sparrow, a WILD TURKEY flushed from the underbrush about five feet away from me. It flew down the towpath for a while before heading off into the woods. This was my first turkey sighted in Montgomery county.
For most of the distance between the two locks, the towpath was lined with a huge number of singing Yellow-rumped Warblers. An unusual song turned out (as I expected) to be a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER. I was lucky that it was close and not too hard to find. Every time I tried to spot one of the singing Parulas, I ended up on a Yellow-rump.
I came across a group of five or six PALM WARBLERS that moved together. Both kinds were present.
On the river, there were swallows, a COMMON LOON, and BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
I saw one BROAD-WINGED HAWK soaring low above the tree tops.
