This a.m., I led a trip for Montgomery Bird Club to Hughes Hollow and
Violette's Lock. Thanks to a heads-up by Bill Hubick and Hans
Holbrook and Co.--who had found the bird after we must have walked
right past it earlier--we tried a second time for the Hughes Hollow
sora and got great looks at mid-a.m. (Surely the trip's highlight.)
One accommodating red-headed woodpecker also allowed us to see all
seven expected woodpecker species (adult sapsucker was the final at
Violette's). At Hughes Hollow, a single eastern kingbird early in the
a.m. (chased a red-winged blackbird as if it owned the place) and one
heard house wren, along with three green herons, were sure signs of
spring. In the warbler department, we had three yellow palm warblers,
heard one northern parula warbler (Violette's) and one Louisiana
waterthrush (Violette's). Also four broad-winged hawks over Violette's.
