Had an extremely enjoyable day birding today (Apr. 24). Started out the day
with a FOY BROWN THRASHER at the end of our driveway. Susquehanna SP
in Harford County was excellent. Best bird was an adult BLACK BILLED
CUCKOO, found in the main parking area of the park (where the playground
area is). There is a trail at the SE part of the parking lot, and a footbridge
that traverses a small creek-the bird was found by the creek. Also found in
the woods and open areas were a CERULEAN WARBLER, tons of BLUE GRAY
GNATCATCHERS, a NORTHERN PARULA, WARBLING VIREO, a pair of BROWN
THRASHERS being harassed by a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, a juvenille
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, several EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, CANADA GEESE, a
NORTHERN FLICKER, and OSPREY.
Our next stop was the Rock Run Mill area where we added BLACK AND WHITE
WARBLER, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH and NORTHERN ROUGH WING
SWALLOWS. The Lapidum area had CASPIAN TERNS, tons of DOUBLE
CRESTED CORMORANTS and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
Next, we were off to Swan Harbor, where a total of 3 AMERICAN BITTERNS
kerplunked away, and we were able to get great looks, especially one that
was seen by the bird blind. Other birds were at least 2 pairs of BLUE WINGED
TEALS, a pair of GREEN WINGED TEALS, flushed up at least 3 SORAs,
WILSON'S SNIPE galore, PIED BILLED GREBE, NORTHERN ROUGH WING, BARN
and TREE SWALLOWS which were chased down by a SHARP SHINNED HAWK,
an adult and juvenille BALD EAGLE, a pair of WOOD DUCKS, HORNED LARKS in
the surrounding fields and a CANADA GOOSE sitting on a nest. Good birding
and happy migration!
