My husband and I had another outstanding day of birding. After seeing and
hearing the GRASSHOPPER SPARROW posted by Sean McCandless (thanks
Sean!), we tried for the Ruff that was previously posted at Covey's Landing
Rd, but had no luck. We quickly birded Pickering Creek, but again had no luck
with some of the birds that were seen.
Our luck changed though when we decided to drive to Elliott Island Rd. Late
afternoon daylight hours we had tons of LEAST SANDPIPERS and DUNLIN in a
small pool of water. WILLET were calling and seen well, SEASIDE SPARROW,
SAVANNAH SPARROW, MARSH WREN., BALD EAGLE and GREATER YELLOWLEGS
were also evident. Towards the end of the drive we heard some commotion
and saw an EASTERN KINGBIRD chasing a GREEN HERON!
The true wonder of this fascinating place though happens after dark. We
heard GREAT HORNED OWL and at least a dozen VIRGINIA RAIL. CHUCK WILL'
S WIDOWS were chanting all over the place in the wooded areas . And what I
though was a late AMERICAN WOODCOCK actually "peenting" and doing a
display flight! Good birding to all!
