Dave Mozurkewich and I had a lovely walk in Greenbelt
Park this morning. I've come to a conclusion, though,
and it's one that will probably upset a lot of people,
and it is this: there is only ONE kind of warbler in
the whole world, and it's the Yellow-Rumped Warbler.
All those other so-called warblers are simply the
product of some overachiever's imagination. Honestly.
I have three hours of observation to back up this
statement. What am I talking about? First it was the
Black-Throated Blue that we heard - we listened, got a
pretty good idea where it was calling from, and then
searched the treetops for the singer - there it is!
No, it's a yellow-rump. Then was the Black-Throated
Green, so close it was practically laughing in our
faces - we looked, looked, looked...and finally
found...another yellow-rump. For every bird we heard
we must have seen 6 yellow-rumps. I've decided that
yellow-rumps must be master mimics and ventriloquists.
Okay, I'm exaggerating just a little bit. All told we
came away with 9 warbler species for the morning -
Ovenbird, Pine, Palm, Worm-Eating, Yellow-Rumped,
Redstart, Black-Throated Blue, Black-Throated Green,
and Black-and-White. We never did see the B-T Green
or Blue, even though I could swear they were probably
close enough to get a pretty good look at.
Aside from the warblers, there were some other really
sweet birds, including several FOY birds. Wood
thrush, Veery, Yellow-Billed Cuckoo (several),
Red-eyed, Yellow-Throated and Blue-Headed Vireos, and
a flyover Green Heron and Great Blue Heron.
All in all, a lovely morning!
Good birding,
