on the Baltimore Beltway early this afternoon I was driving under an
overpass, glanced out my right window and saw a green heron flying
parallel with me about ten feet off the ground and right along the shoulder
of the road.

Perhaps these birds have decided to rely on MapQuest for navigating
their migration treks.   Who knows, your night herons may have just
flown across the District after following I-95 for several days.

Everybody else does it.   Why shouldn't they?
