Subject: Good siting

On this past Saturday, Hal and I canoed part of the Pocomoke River in
Worcester County . The section we did is about 8 to 9 miles north of Snow
Hill.

The river was lined with prothonotary warblers and redstarts. Other
warblers included: black and white, one Kentucky, parula, yellowthroat and
yellow. Red-eyed vireos were calling as well as 2 scarlet tanagers.

Other migrants included: great crested flycatchers, pewees, blue gray
gnatcatchers and one yellow-billed cuckoo. We did hear rusty blackbirds
within the first 1/4 mile of the trip, but not after that.

Best sighting was that of a female hooded merganser with her brood of 8
young. We watched them for quite a distance-about 800 feet while they swam
in front of our canoe. Hal estimates that the brood would be classified 2A,
meaning they were starting to look like the adult duck and had wing
feathers.

We checked the Breeding Bird Atlas for Delaware and they have no records
except that they think they may breed around Prime Hook. This is based on a
sighting of a female during the breeding season.

Maryland's Bird Atlas has some records for western Maryland. None for the
eastern Shore, at least that we could find.
