I just saw a purple finch at our birdbath in downtown DC  and realized that I 
haven't seen any purple finches in years if not a decade in  our alley.  It 
was a brilliant deep red and quite obviously not a house  finch.  I was 
wondering if any of you have been spotting them this  year  or was this just a 
pleasant bit of luck.
