Hello all.
I had the pleasure of observing one of today's Mississippi Kites at Fort
Smallwood thanks to a well timed radio call from my superintendent who was
watching Sue Ricciardi and Hal Wirenga watch the bird. Timing is everything, I
guess.
Let's hope we can save a Kite or two for Bill Hubick and his camera.
Monday and Tuesday night brought good-sized gatherings (12-15 birds on
both nights) of Common Nighthawks to the fort. Tuesday at dusk, I turned my
car into a 'nighthawk feeder' by turning on the bright lights and idling around
the park as the birds crossed by my light beams, devouring the insects.
This evening's rain storm pushed the birds away, but I did see one Nighthawk
fly over earlier in the afternoon.
