On Tuesday the 15th at Magee Marsh (Crane Creek, Ohio) standing on a
lilypad in brilliant sunshine and sipping water, not 30 feet away, was a Scarlet
Tanager. It clearly could be nothing else but the color was a bright red orange
with wings that were brown rather than black. Wing coverts showed
contrasting bars. I was dumfounded but checking Sibley I saw that the
coloration was not that unusual. Subsequently my wife told me she had seen
an orange bird on the gold mine tract several years ago but had not noticed
the oddity in the wings.
