I was continuing my surveys of possible breeding locations of
Louisiana Waterthrushes and Prothonotary Warblers along the C&O Canal
towpath in lower Montgomery County this morning. About a mile above
Great Falls Tavern I left the towpath and took the trail downstream
along the river. To my surprise, I saw two drake COMMON GOLDENEYES
in the slack water just above Conn Island. They were diving
frequently and swimming around, and generally looked pretty
healthy. This is quite late in the migration season for these ducks
to be in our area (though not by any means unprecedented, according
to "The Yellow Book."
