Had a couple of noteworthy sightings/hearings in the
yard the last couple of days. First, there has been a
pair of male Summer Tanagers duking it out over
territory in the yard. Two evenings ago, I was lucky
enough to witness them tumble from the trees almost
crashing to the ground. Since then they seem to have
figured out their territories and are singing from our
yard and the neighbor's.

This morning we woke to the sounds of at least two
Swainson's Thrushes singing. One was just outside the
bedroom window, the other out in the front yard. Then
they began to sing over top of each other. You can't
even call it dueting, more like dueling since the
songs jumbled together. Very interesting. I seem to
recall hearing this on the Stokes CD but had never
heard it live.

Had a "rare bird" on Saturday. Jane and I heard a
strange rumbling while we were out walking and looked
up to see a twin tail, twin engine B-25 circling in to
land at our local airport. We heard it again Sunday
morning as it was taking off but never saw it. WW2
aircraft engines have quite a unique sound since they
had such a huge displacement and not that much
horsepower compared to modern engines. When you hear
one, you sure know it!
