I saw a very interesting variant of the Scarlet Tanager in Shady Side, Md. I have never seen the orange variant but will never forget it. Really a striking bird. He remained in the yard for several minutes and I noted that his call note was varied as well. The traditional "chip-burr" was a "chip - chip burr" the first part was more like a studder.
How common is this variant?
