Hi,

I spent Saturday and Sunday birding in Garrett and Allegany Counties with
Colleen Meny, Jim Brighton and Jim Stasz. Here are some of the birds and
other creatures we observed:

Saturday June 2:
Finzel Swamp:
Va Rail – 1 seen walking under easternmost bridge
Sora – 1 heard
Black-billed Cuckoo - 2
Eastern Screech Owl – 1 heard
Hairy Woodpecker – pair
Pileated Woodpecker – 1
Alder Flycatcher – 1 singing
GCFly
Cedar Waxwings – flock
Eastern Bluebird
Catbirds
Brown Thrasher
Yellow Warbler – 1
Black-throated Green Warbler – 1 heard
Northern Waterthrush – 2
CoYe - many
Swamp Sparrow – many
Rose-breasted Grosbeak – 2
Goldfinch
Purple Finch

While driving along 68 Jim Stasz’s car was not happy. We pulled over and
Jim spotted a Black-billed Cuckoo while he contemplated what to do.

Mammals included both Red and Gray Squirrels (in deciduous forest – strange
for the red squirrel), WT Deer

Herps included a Garter Snake, Am. Toad and Dusky Salamanders (Northern or
Mountain – the ones with the round tails)

Butterflies we saw included:
Appalachian Swallowtail
Red-spotted Purple
Hobomok Skipper
Least Skipper
European Skipper

Odonates we saw included:
Unicorn Clubtail
Variable Darner

to try again with a GPS.
Roughed Grouse
Brown Creeper
Veery
Hermit Thrush
Black-throated Blue Warbler

Plus 2 Red Efts, a Ring-necked Snake, and a Dusky Salamander.

Sunday, June 3:

Jim Stasz abandoned us around 1:30 AM to join Matt Hafner for an ‘early’
tour of Garrett. Jim Brighton, Colleen and I slept in and then birded the
eastern edge of the Maryland panhandle, starting at Swain Road. This is a
beautiful area with lots of back roads, beautiful scenery, and interesting
flora and fauna.

Swain Road:
Worm-eating Warblers – we heard these most places we stopped.
YT Vireo
RN Pheasant – one roadkill. I’ll have to stop back one morning and see if
any more are around.

Cliff Road: YT Vireo

Butterflies included several Little Wood Satyrs.
We had lots of Powdered Dancers plus some Riverside Bluets. Others too,
but I’ll have to check with Jim on what they were. I forgot to take notes
on the Odes we were seeing!

Herps included a Northern Water Snake, adult Eastern red-spotted Newts, and
Eastern Painted Turtles.

Jim and Colleen left around 12 and I continued working my way south.

Overlook on Carrol:
RT Hummingbird
Hooded Warbler
WE Warbler
Pine Warbler

15 mile Creek:
Hairy Woodpecker
Warbling Vireo
YT Vireo
Cedar Waxwings
Cerulean Warbler
American Redstart
Orchard Oriole

It started raining and I poked around a few places on Green Ridge Road but
found nothing of particular interest. My only consolation for staying out
in the rain was that on my way out I saw 3 Wild Turkeys off of East Wilson
Road.

A great weekend at some interesting locations. And since we have been in a
drought, even the rain was welcome.

Tom
