The journal Nature dated June 7 contains an article "West Nile Virus
emergence and large-scale declines of North American bird
populations", by LaDeau, Kilpatrick, and Marra. Two of the three
authors are locals (Smithsonian Migratory bird Center, at the
National Zoo). The study reports on population changes in 20 bird
species since 1980 in the Northeast ; and for 7 of these species
Maryland data are presented as well. I have the pdf version if anyone
is interested and has no access to the full text online (http://
