Inspired by Bob Ringler and Debbie Terry's report from Thursday my wife and I
went to NW Carroll and NE Frederick County this afternoon (June 9). While we
missed the Bobolinks near Keysville we did find Red-headed Woodpeckers. One
was an adult bird seen along Detour Road maybe half a mile south of Rocky
Ridge Road in Frederick County. The other was heard along Baumgardner Road
in Carroll County in woods just south of Piney Creek. We had several
Grasshopper Sparrows in both counties and 2 Horned Larks along Shriver Road
and Bollinger School Road (both in Frederick County). We also could not find
any Vesper or Savannah Sparrows. The oddest bird was waiting for us when
we got back to Columbia: a lingering White-throated Sparrow was scratching
for leftover sunflower seeds under our feeder.
