It always amuses me when I hear people ranting and raving about
cowbirds and how they should be wiped out.  Cowbirds have evolved a
method of reproduction over time that works well for them.  They
have become a problem for other species because the habitat has been
so fragmented and changed by human intervention that they can now be
more successful with larger blocks of a species population.

Let's face it, the problem is not cowbirds, it is us, with our
burgeoning populations, and our rampant, uncontrolled development.
Forests are fragmented, hedgerows are plowed under, fields
themselves are replaced by sterile green lawns.

And we blame the cowbird....sigh.  Talk about killing the
messenger...
