I would invite people who know of Wildlife Rehabilitators to post a
listing of them. This is especially needed for songbirds, for I expect that
lots of the local birders get the same kind of requests from their neighbors
as Dan and Andy reported. I had a call about a "swallow with a broken wing"
a few days ago, and really was not in position to provide much help here in
the Talbot County area. (By the time I called back, the bird had flown
away. It must have been just stunned from flying into something.) It would
sure help to know where the nearest rehab facility is through all parts of
our state.
By the way, the July/August 2007 issue of Birders World carries an
article by Julie Zickefoose that tells of the intense dedication necessary
to rehab a young Phoebe. Such projects are of course illegal for any
non-certified person. I have known a few rehab people over the years, and I
stand in awe of their dedication and skill.

Dan,

I inherited a baby Robin a few weeks back from a friend who unknowly
removed it from her yard eventhough the mother was around and trying to
feed it. I kept in a box for a few days and it chowed on earthworms,
mealworms (from pet store) and moist dried dog food.

After a few days I started getting concerned that I could not take it
all the way to adulthood. I contacted 2nd Chance Wildlife Center in
Gaithersburg MD for advice. They asked me to bring it them. Not only
did they have the experience to raise it but they also told me I
"breaking the law" because I was not a certified Wildlife Rehabilitator.

I took Luther the robin(my 11 year old's name for it) to the center and
they took him off my hands. They must have had about 100 other robins
of various ages. Their supposed to send me a postcard when they release
him into the wild. I gave a donation on my way out the door. My son
was "bummed" but I knew it was the right thing to do.

There must be a similar organization in Anne Arundel Co.
